We re-branding and re-launching Mission-Is-Possible as The Extra Smile Project.
The name ‘The Extra Smile Project’ comes from combining the biblical idea of going the extra mile for someone together with the idea of being able to put a smile on someone’s face in our church community by serving them and their needs in a practical way.
Our re-launch is accompanied by the opening of a new savings account at church, into which people are welcome to make donations. This fund has been set-up to support The Extra Smile Project.
The project very much continues the objectives that we set out with when we started up Mission Is Possible back in January of this year.
These objectives were to provide practical ad-hoc help to people in our church who are otherwise unable to help themselves, such as single mums, unemployed people or those with long-term sickness. When appropriate, such help may also be offered to people outside the church.
We like to help with house moves, decorating rooms, tidying up gardens and finding and supplying furniture, and our team has already been able to develop relationships with a number of domestic and commercial suppliers who can offer discounts for work or supplies required in meeting these needs.
You can help with The Extra Smile Project in four ways:
Firstly, if you would like to support it financially, you can make donations into the new account by making cheques payable to LGCC, and noting on the back that they should be designated to ‘The Extra Smile Project’. Gifts made into this account will still benefit from Gift Aid if you are a taxpayer. Alternatively, you can set-up a Standing Order to the account, using Sort Code 60 05 16 and Account Number 18521355.
Secondly, if you have stuff that’s still perfectly fit for use, which would otherwise be heading for the tip – let us know about it and we may well be able to find someone in our church or beyond who would love to make use of it.
Thirdly, if you identify a need that could be met by The Extra Smile Project upon someone else’s behalf, or if you would like some assistance yourself, please let us know. Whilst we do have some basic criteria connected with offering help, to ensure that what we are doing is focused on those in most need, we would assess all requests.
Finally, if you are the sort of person who likes to be practical or could offer us helpful skills in various areas, we would love you to get involved. We need people with a variety of skills and plenty of willingness. Mission Is Possible has already benefited from lots of volunteer input along the way, and we would love for that to continue.
There are few things in life as satisfying as walking away from the home of a single mum knowing that you and your team have left it decorated and carpeted for her, just because you cared enough about that to make it happen. The project is designed around making this kind of thing happen as easily as possible.
The Extra Smile Project is led by a team from the church, consisting of Nick Whittome, Eric Camp and John Draper. For further information, please contact the office on 01462 480126 or info@lgcitychurch.net
