Eldership @ LGCC

Elders are described as ‘Presbureros’ which means an older or more experienced Christian (1 Timothy 3:6; 5:17 ), the emphasis here is on maturity in the faith and in life, not just age. Elders are also described as shepherds of the flock, a protector, and also a manager and steward. Elders are relied on for their trustworthiness and ability in practical and financial matters. The bible describes the leadership in the plural as apposed to a single leadership of the church. Elders are therefore to be an ‘eldership’ and those who are part of it are to be genuine team players. Being an Elder is an office and a position conferred upon a person by appointment and affirmation of others:

The Relationship with the Senior Pastor.

The New Testament pattern is a plurality of elders in each local church. From among those elders, one specific person will be the primary leader of that church, (generally called ‘pastor’ in the modern context – or ‘senior pastor’).

For example:
  • Timothy in Ephesus (1 & 2 Timothy)
  • Titus in Crete (Titus 1:5)
  • James in Jerusalem (Acts 12:17; 15:13; also Galatians 2:12).
  • Jesus and His disciples also act as a model to this pattern, Peter then ‘stood out’ from amongst the disciples as primary leader in the early inception of the church at Pentecost. (See Acts 1:15).

The Relationship with the congregation.

It is important that the elders of a local church are well known, stand out and are connected in relating directly to the body of the church.
