The Gospel - what's it all about?

HOW DO YOU BECOME A CHRISTIAN?

Good Question! With a really simple answer!
You have to know something and pray something.

Something to know: We have a problem but there is a solution.

You know yourself that there are times when you don’t do the right thing even when you want to! Unfortunately you also know that there are occasions when you actually want to do the wrong thing and enjoy the ‘buzz’ of doing it! That’s the problem. Everyone has done something wrong, and carries on thinking and doing things wrong. Sometimes we don’t mean it, and often we don’t want to hurt others, or ourselves, but we do.

BUT God has provided a solution to this problem. God’s solution was that He sent Jesus to come to earth and then die on the Cross as a payment for all the things we have done wrong. God does not want to punish us because Jesus has taken our punishment for us. This is a very important thing to know. For absolutely every single thing or thought we have ever done wrong Jesus has ‘paid’ for it by dying on the Cross for us. For God, the death of Jesus was the way in which He has made a way for us to come to God. Everyone who accepts that they have done something wrong, and is prepared to admit this wrong to God, and then recognises that Jesus died to pay for what they have done, can then move on to the next part of becoming a Christian… something to pray!

Something to pray: Honestly talking to God and asking Him to come into your life.

You might never have really ‘prayed’ in your life. You could be forgiven for thinking that it means you have to go to a church or a temple or some other ‘holy’ place to do it! Some people think that they can’t pray for themselves and have to get a priest or a vicar to pray for them. None of these ideas is right – to pray you don’t even have to use special words in a religious type language! Praying is simply talking to God. Talking to Him honestly in your own words, saying things to Him that you really mean – that’s praying. You can pray by saying things in your mind or quietly under your breath or right out loud – God can hear you whatever way you choose to do it! So if you want to become a Christian, you have to talk to God about how sorry you are about the things you have done wrong, and then ask Jesus to forgive you of these things. Once you have done this, you can straightaway ask Jesus to live in your life and He does because He is alive! It’s great! If you pray like that and mean it – you actually ‘become a Christian’. Simple isn’t it?
Here is a prayer that millions have prayed in order to become a Christian. You can say it as it is, or something like it in your own words – the important thing is that you mean it and talk honestly to God. Here goes… ready?

Lord Jesus Christ, I am sorry for the things I have done wrong in my life, please forgive me. I now turn from everything which I know is wrong. Thank you that you died on the cross for me so that I could be forgiven and set free. Thank you that you now offer me this gift of forgiveness and your Spirit. I now receive this gift. Please come into my life by your Holy Spirit to be with me forever. Come and be my Lord. Thank you Lord Jesus. Amen

If you prayed that prayer…Woo hoo! You are now absolutely a Christian! Great isn’t it? Simple isn’t it? It is as straightforward as that, but it might not be easy staying a Christian unless you take some important steps right away.

WHAT DO I DO NOW? Get ‘n’ Go!

1. Get a Bible – it will help you find out more about God. Choose one in a language you can understand. Get a Christian friend to help you choose one or contact us. Don’t start reading it at the first page but read a book called ‘Mark’ – this book will tell you about Jesus’ life.

2. Go and tell a Christian friend that you have just asked Jesus into your life. You do not have to be a ‘loner’ as a new Christian – they will be happy for you and help you.

3. Get yourself along to a lively church. Go and find other believers who you can become friends with. A good church will help you to become strong in your new faith. They will teach you how to be a Christian and help you if you have any problems. If you have trouble finding a church contact us and we will help you find one.

4. Go to God by talking to Him in prayer every day, and as often as you want to talk to Him. Being a Christian is about having a friendship with God, and as you talk to Him this friendship will get stronger – especially when you see that God will answer your prayers and you will even feel like He is talking back to you! Get into praying and it will go really well in your first steps as a new Christian.

Deciding to become a Christian is the biggest and best decision you will ever make. It is a life long journey into the very best of life. It is something that will last beyond this life and into eternity. It is the best offer you will ever get. It is something you cannot afford to pass up. It is something worth doing today!

Enjoy a great life…
